Kiisi Trust Foundation (KTF) Scholarship Overview
Kiisi Trust Foundation works to empower & improve individuals and rural communities through collaboration with private & public institutions & donors. Although it has had some impact of resource exploitation on Ogoniland, an area in the Niger Delta, and how it has become symbolic of environmental degradation. Between 1976 and 1991, over 2,900 oil spills occurred, releasing roughly 2.1 million barrels of oil and causing significant environmental damage.
The region gained international attention in the early 1990s after the death of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, whose struggle and that of other Ogoni activists eventually led to the cessation of oil production activities in 1993. Despite this, the damage was already done. In 2009, a group of survivors and family members of human rights abuse victims received a $15.5 million out-of-court settlement from Shell. With $5 million of that settlement, they established the Kiisi Trust Fund, which supports education, health, community development, and other initiatives for the Ogoni people and their communities.
