About DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship
The DAAD Leadership Scholarship Scheme in Germany is the world’s largest funding organization for international students from developing countries. DAAD has been committed to bringing impact on the development of African countries through its immense support towards providing excellent and quality education for students in this region.
DAAD has funded around two million scholars in Germany and abroad since its inception in the year 1925.

Eligibility Requirement for DAAD Leadership Scholarship
This scholarship is of two categories. Both categories have their requirements as well.
1) Highly qualified refugees who hold refugee status and fulfill the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.
Applicants in this category must fulfill the following conditions:
- Holding refugee status in their host countries, being granted before April 18th, 2022
- The country of asylum must be either Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda
- Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application
2) Highly qualified graduates from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda who fulfill the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.
Applicants must fulfill the following conditions:
- Citizenship of either Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda
- Country of residence is Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda
- Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application
General Requirements
- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application which qualifies to study for a master’s at an officially recognized university in Germany
- A Bachelor’s degree of at least 2nd class upper division level is required
- As a rule, not more than 6 years should have passed since the completion of the last academic degree (see important information for scholarship applicants / Section A, point 2)
- Good English or good German language skills
Benefits of Scholarship
Selected applicants will receive a scholarship with the following benefits
- Costs for a Language course (2, 4, or 6 months) in Germany before the start of the study program include the coverage of the test fees for a German language certificate.
- Scholarship awardees will receive adequate health, accident, and private/personal liability insurance in Germany.
- All beneficiaries will also be eligible for a travel allowance for travel to and back to your country of origin.
- One-off study allowance for all beneficiaries
- Tuition fee coverage for your selected degree programme
- Selected candidates will receive a monthly scholarship payment amounting to 861 EURO
Selection Modality
The selection process will have a pre-selection stage. The preselection will be done based on the application documents submitted. Candidates who succeed to get to the preselection stage will be invited to an interview with an independent selection committee of university professors in the selected African countries.
In addition to previous achievements in school and university, language skills, and general motivation, the main selection criterion is a convincing description of the planned studies in Germany. Equally important will be a reflected answer on how the chosen academic field can contribute to the further development of the home country.
All preselected candidates must make available their original documents during the interview.

Interested and qualified applicants are to submit their applications online via the DAAD scholarship application portal. All required documents must be scanned and uploaded on the portal where necessary

- Applications submitted through other channels or to other authorities will not be considered.
- The DAAD portal closes at 24.00 hrs. Central European Time (CET) on the last application day.
- Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their applications are complete.
Take Note: the “Application portal” tab in the scholarship database only appears while the current application period is running. Once the application deadline is expired, the portal for this programme is not accessible until next year’s application period.
