Obama Foundation Scholars Program
Individuals from all around the world that demonstrate leadership qualities are hereby invited to apply for the University of Columbia 2023 Obama Foundation Scholars Program for Emerging Leaders.
Columbia University’s Obama Foundation Scholars will take part in Columbia World Projects, a new initiative in which Columbia faculty and researchers will collaborate with governments, nonprofits, the private sector, and intergovernmental organizations to develop tangible solutions to real-world problems.
The program will also take advantage of the unique opportunities for engagement that come with being located in one of the world’s most important research centers in New York City.
What Should I Know About the Obama Foundation Scholars?
The Barack Obama Foundation Scholars live at Columbia World Projects, a new initiative aimed at systematically bringing university research out into the world in the form of projects that will have a significant and long-term positive impact on people’s lives and will help guide the way to solutions to intractable problems, while also enriching research and scholarship. Scholars will take part in CWP activities throughout the academic year.
After completing the program, Obama Foundation Scholars are empowered to return to the regions where they have been working and continue their service.
The program’s goal is to assist Obama Foundation Scholars in applying the connections and skills they gain during the program to the benefit of their communities, countries, and regions. We anticipate that Obama Foundation Scholars will remain involved with the Obama Foundation after the program concludes.

Eligibility Requirements for Obama Foundation Masters Scholarship
The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University seeks rising leaders from around the world who meet the following criteria:
- Have a proven commitment to service and leadership within a community, region, or country outside the United States, coupled with a demonstrated commitment to return to these communities following their completion of the program and apply their enhanced training, skills, and connections on a long-term basis for the benefit of these communities
- Are emerging leaders who have made meaningful contributions to their field and are now at a “tipping point” in their careers
- Are fluent in English (verbal, written, and spoken)
- Have the ability and inclination to shape the future of their community positively
- Have a demonstrated commitment to humility, integrity, inclusivity, stewardship, fearlessness, imagination, and teamwork
Eligible Countries/Regions for the Obama Foundation Scholars Program
Based in Region: You currently reside in one of the following eligible nations or territories in the region in which you are applying:
- Africa: All nations, countries, and territories on the African continent.
- Asia-Pacific: American Samoa; Australia; Brunei; Cambodia; China; Cook Islands; Federated States of Micronesia; Fiji; French Polynesia; Guam; Hawai`i; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Japan; Kiribati; Korea, North (DPRK); Korea, South (ROK); Laos; Malaysia; Marshall Islands; Mongolia; Myanmar; Nauru; New Caledonia; Macao; New Zealand; Niue; Northern Mariana Islands; Palau; Papua New Guinea; Philippines; Pitcairn Islands; Samoa; Singapore; Solomon Islands; Taiwan; Thailand; Timor-Leste; Tokelau; Tonga; Tuvalu; Vanuatu; Vietnam; Wallis and Futuna
Please note that residents of South Asian countries are not eligible for this particular program. The Obama Foundation expects to offer leadership programs for South Asian countries in the future.
- Europe: Any of the 46 Council of Europe member states and Kosovo.
Citizenship/Residency: You must meet one of the criteria below for the region in which you are applying:
- You are a citizen of an eligible nation or territory OR
- You are a permanent resident of an eligible nation or territory OR
- You are a refugee or asylum seeker in an eligible nation or territory OR
- You have lived in an eligible nation or territory for at least the last 5 years, regardless of documentation status.
