About the University of Cape Town

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is the oldest university in South Africa and one of Africa’s leading teaching and research institutions.

UCT began as the South African College, a boys’ high school, in 1829. The College had a small tertiary-education facility that grew significantly after 1880 when the discovery of gold and diamonds in the north – and the resulting demand for mining skills – provided it with the financial boost it needed to expand.

The Alfred Beit bequest, as well as additional significant gifts from mining magnates Julius Wernher and Otto Beit, helped to establish UCT as a university in 1918. The new university also received significant support from well-wishers in the Cape Town area, as well as a significant state grant for the first time.
